Adjust snowfall speed range

Use Speed Variance to go slower or faster

The Speed Variance slider is designed to give you more control when the usual Min Speed and Max Speed range in Custom is not enough on its own.

Speed Variance defaults to 4, which gives a normal level of variation in the snowfall. For most stores, this creates a natural-looking mix of slower and faster flakes.

If you want the snowfall to feel slower or faster than the standard range available in Custom, increase Speed Variance and then fine-tune Min Speed to push the overall effect in the direction you want.

Use Min Speed to set the baseline feel of the snowfall, then use Speed Variance to widen the range and create a slower or faster result overall.

Recommended ways to adjust speed

  • For a softer, calmer snowfall, lower Min Speed first, then increase Speed Variance if the effect still feels too uniform.

  • For a more energetic snowfall, raise Min Speed and increase Speed Variance to allow faster flakes to appear.

  • If the animation feels too inconsistent, reduce Speed Variance to make flake movement more even.

  • Use the live preview after each adjustment so you can judge the effect against your actual storefront banners, images, and page layout.

A good starting point is to leave Speed Variance at 4, adjust Min Speed until the snowfall feels close to what you want, and then increase Speed Variance gradually for more movement range.

What each custom setting changes

  • Increase Coverage for a fuller snowfall effect.

  • Increase Size if you want flakes to be more visible on banners and hero images.

  • Adjust Min Speed and Max Speed to control the slowest and fastest falling flakes.

  • Increase Speed Variance if you need the snowfall to move outside the usual feel of the default speed range.

  • Use Round if you want clean circular flakes, or turn it off for a more jagged, natural snow look.

  • Turn on Shadow if your store uses light backgrounds and the flakes need more contrast.

Use a custom image instead of snowflakes

You can replace the standard flakes with your own artwork. This is useful if you want themed shapes such as stars, hearts, leaves, or branded icons.

In the Seasonly embed settings, change Type to Image.

After selecting Image, you can:

  • Select an existing image from your Shopify Files section.

  • Upload a new image.

  • Generate a new image with AI.

Check the live theme preview to make sure the image looks clear at your chosen Size, Coverage, Min Speed, Max Speed, and Speed Variance.

Click Save once the animation looks right.

When Type is set to Image, your selected image becomes the falling element in place of the normal flakes.

Best practices for custom animations

  • Use smaller images for a cleaner falling effect and faster loading.

  • Choose colours that contrast with your storefront background so the animation stays visible.

  • Keep Coverage, Min Speed, and Speed Variance balanced so the effect feels festive without distracting from shopping.

  • Test on both desktop and mobile views in the Shopify theme editor before saving.

Very large images, very high coverage settings, or an aggressively high speed range can make the effect look crowded. Preview the animation before saving it to your live theme.
